The Refrain Review & Giveaway

Their paths have crossed, setting the refrain in motion.

Ever since flannel and Doc Martens were considered edgy fashion, Canadian cousins Natalie and Chloe have dreamt of a life in New York City. But now that they’ve finally scored a Manhattan zip code, their teenaged fantasies are overshadowed by an adult reality. With Natalie struggling to accept a long-distance relationship—and her constant battle with loneliness, her survival depends on Zach’s safe return. And with Chloe’s endless need to find balance and purpose—and her embarrassing secret holding her back, can Adam Ford be the one to understand her completely?

Change is inevitable and fate is insisting. And when panic follows crisis and love is questioned, stories can change in unexpected ways. The narrative becomes the verse, the part to the whole—the story within the story.

Reading this series was a truly unique experience.  Fresh, entertaining and so many life lessons packed into a steamy little trio of books.  When I started reading book 1, The Ballad, I was a little surprised at the storyline and how it played out.  The plot was reversed going from present to past...a new one for me but I enjoyed it.  The characters were engaging and the story kept you guessing, beating along to it's own drum.

Intermission, Book 2, was where I was well and truly hooked.  I fell completely for Natalie and Zach's story.  They had such a fun and spicy chemistry but it had an underlying sadness to it as well, giving it just enough drama to keep you glued to the pages.

Now for The Refrain...where everything really comes together.  I had to kind of sit and just let this whole series absorb.  It pulls so many different emotions from you.  The Refrain was phenomenal...I laughed, I cried and I had moments of pure frustration.  I loved getting to know Adam better in this book.  I didn't really connect with him until The Refrain, but once I did...phew!  We get more of Nat and Zach...their crazy banter and heartbreaking story.  Overall, I give the series a 5 Star Rating!  If you are looking for something different, packed with steam, drama & humor, I highly recommend it!

Slamming her hand against the keys to the piano, Chloe shouts, “Who is she?”

“The client is a forty-seven year old man.”
“Not the client, who are you fucking?” Chloe demands, her voice deep and raw.
Adam takes two steps closer, glaring down at Chloe’s pitiful face. “I’m not fucking anyone.  Not even my wife,” he snarls.  It’s the answer Chloe needs to hear, but not the one she wants.
She moves a step closer and pokes his chest. “Then explain this to me.”
“Explain what?”
“This—this tension.  Why don’t I trust you?  Why am I so angry—where the fuck have you been?”  Chloe’s voice is dry and emotional, the words stinging her throat and falling from her mouth like hot embers. She punches his arm, hits his chest, and slaps at his smug expression.
Adam grabs her arms, his fingers digging into her flesh, but Chloe fights him. “Stop it,” he says.  Chloe continues to wave her arms, desperately trying to break herself free.  Adam tightens his grip and twists her arm behind her back, controlling her…controlling her behavior.  “I have a career.  Do you understand that?  I’m working, I’m being a provider, I’m being a dad—doing the right thing.”
With as much contempt as she can gather, she shouts, “The right thing?  The right thing—your life is just one blob of obligation now?  Fuck you, Adam.  Always trying to be perfect—always doing the right thing.  We wouldn’t want anyone to know what you really are!”
“What does that mean?”  Adam eases his grip, upset by her threat.
“You’re a wall.”  Chloe yanks her arms free and shoves Adam’s chest.  “A fucking brick wall—no emotion and no attachment to anything that doesn’t fit your definition of right or wrong.  I’m sick of it!” Chloe’s voice is shaky and inaudible, tears suddenly drowning her words.
“Really?”  He smirks.  “You need me.  You need me to be your wall—you need an excuse to be destructive.  But then when you need that brick wall again, who’s supposed to build it?”
Chloe grits her teeth and holds her breath, rage setting in.  “You’re a fucking asshole.  God, you’re so arrogant—fuck you.”  Chloe shoves past Adam, running straight to the front door.  She hesitates momentarily to study her bare feet but then impulsively decides to run out into the summer rain.  She wants to run away, she wants to feel that sense of purpose again.  Adam follows behind her, shouting her name.  He’s enraged and bewildered—this is why he loves her—this is why she needs him.
“Chloe stop.”  Adam catches up to her and grabs her hand, yanking her in his direction.  The raindrops conceal her tears, there’s no end to one and a beginning of another—no separation of pain and passion.  Possibly the secret to any great romance…passion evolves from pain.
Adam takes Chloe in his arms and forces her against the large maple tree.  The fullness of the branches protects them from the rain, but their emotions are completely exposed and unrefined.
Chloe sobs, jerking her hand from his tight grasp.  “Leave me alone.”
“No,” he responds.
Adam pins her against the tree, slamming his hands above her shoulders.  They stare into each other’s eyes—carnal lust brimming with each sensation, old and new…this is one of those moments.  Chloe’s chest rises and falls.  Rain splatters against the tree.  Adam’s lips quiver with need.  Eyes wander over familiar features.  Drip drop—it’s rhythm.
And then, associating pain with passion, Chloe bites Adam’s lower lip—sucking and licking the delicate, rain-kissed skin.  Adam’s hand moves to her neck, squeezing gently to signify his control.  He kisses her, deep and satisfying, absorbing every last drop of painful doubt from her mind.  Chloe’s arms move to his shoulders, grasping…searching…
Words are meaningless.  Words are breathless.
“Adam.”
Adam releases his hold, but not his authority.  In a hasty, yet sensual effort, he lifts Chloe into his arms—positioning one arm under her legs and the other tightly around her back.
“Shut up.” He commands with a smile.
And just like Rhett Butler seizing Scarlett O’Hara with passionate fury, Adam reclaims Chloe. Under the pouring rain.  Up the steps of the ironed stoop.  Through the door of their centuries-old brownstone.  Dripping wet.  Hearts racing.  Souls connecting.
…and then he slams the door.

Toxic Review & Giveaway

***Toxic: Logan's Story is Book Four of the Torn Series, but it can be read as a standalone if desired.***

True love is forever. After years of chasing his best friend, Chloe, Logan finally managed to win her heart—or so he thought. His world crashes down around him when she confesses to cheating on him with a local rock star, Drake. Unable to let her go completely from his life, Logan reassumes his role of best friend while he watches Chloe find her happily ever after with another man. Each day, he sinks further and further into his depression, and the kind, caring Logan he once was dies. When Jade, a member of Drake’s band, inserts herself into his life, Logan never expects to fall for her. He’s too broken, too damaged.

Jade ran away from home when she was seventeen, desperate to escape her abusive stepfather and her controlling boyfriend, Mikey. The only regret she has is that she left behind her little sister, Bethaney. When Jade’s band, Breaking the Hunger, hits it big, she vows to go back to her hometown not only to reconnect with her little sister, but also to show her stepfather that she’s not worthless like he said.

The moment Jade saw Logan, she knew she wanted him. Unfortunately, he was with Chloe at the time. After his world falls apart, Jade steps in to comfort him, determined to bring back the Logan she once knew.

Sometimes, you find true love with the person you never least expect. Can Logan and Jade heal each other? Or will they forever be changed by their toxic pasts?

I loved Logan's story...my heart broke for him, even though he could frustrate me to no end!  He had been dealt a crappy hand...he had the girl of his dreams only to have that life crumble right before his eyes.  He didn't know where he went wrong, what Drake had over him other than being a Rock Star.  Instead of trying to move on, he covers his pain with alcohol and countless women hoping to numb the pain.  In the end, he only feels worse...this isn't who he really is but he just can't seem to shake Chloe from his mind.

But then Jade comes to try and help him put the pieces back together.  They had always been friends but he had never seen past that.  Now he is noticing her as the kind, beautiful girl she is instead of the hard-as-nails rocker chick she tries to portray to the rest of the world.  Jade has had her fair share of hard lessons, coming from a broken home, running away when she was old enough from the abuse she was put through at the hands of her step-father.  Together Jade and Logan face their past and must decide if the future can be their HEA like Drake and Chloe or they are destined to walk the tortured path alone.

Please Chose 1 Excerpt

I raised an eyebrow. “Why are you so determined to make sure that Jade and I end up together?”

“Because I want you both to be happy, and after all of this sorted out, I think you two could be really happy with each other. You both care a lot about each other. I’ve never seen Jade act the way she did when Drake called her. She was really upset. And you’ve been Mopey McMoperpants since you came home. It’s obvious that you’re both miserable without one another.”

“Do you really think that we’d be happy together? Honestly, I’m not so sure. I don’t exactly fit in with the rest of her world.”

      “Why do you think that?”

“She’s a rock star, Chloe, and I’m just…I’m not into that scene. I don’t like the same things you guys do. I don’t look like any of the other guys she hangs out with. I’m not pierced or tattooed. I’m not…I don’t know what the fuck I’m trying to say here.”

Chloe started to say something, but Drake cut her off, “Look, Logan, I’ve known Jade for a long time. I’ve watched her get hit on by tons of guys, and she’s never paid attention to any of them. She didn’t care that they were part of our scene. Truthfully, most of the guys we hang out with are womanizing assholes.”

“True story,” Chloe cut in, giving Drake a dirty look.

“Hey, I haven’t been that way in a long time. Don’t glare at me like that. Anyway, my point is, just because she lives a certain way and has a certain profession doesn’t mean that she’s going to want a certain type of guy. She obviously likes you, so just go with it.”

“He’s right. Don’t doubt yourself because you two have different lives. You’re a good-looking guy, Logan. You don’t need tattoos or piercings for girls to notice you. Jade obviously likes you just the way you are.”

“I feel like I should pull the car over, so we can all hug. This is getting awkward,” Drake muttered.

Chloe laughed. “Don’t be jealous, Drake. I think you’re a goodlooking guy, too.”

He rolled his eyes. “Thanks. I feel much more secure about our marriage now that you’ve admitted you’re attracted to me.

And, what the hell are you doing here?

Let’s start with the most obvious question, shall we?

F*ck. F***ck.

Ok, good. Now where were we?

I am Justice Drake.
And I turn housewives into whores.

Now…who’s first?

Docked Blitz & Giveaway

A new, sensual Adult Contemporary Romance from author of the Amazon bestselling PRESERVATION SERIES, THE REPLACEMENT, and LOVE AND RELATIVITY. Coming to e-readers everywhere May 26, 2014.

It’s not water that paralyzes Anya Banks—it’s the ocean. Tumultuous and powerful, sleek and unpredictable, it’s just like Tanner Christensen, owner of Trident Voyager, the cruise ship she’s been talked into boarding by her vivacious, foodie fanatic best friend and co-worker, Lana. Tanner exudes confidence, and his raw masculinity is hard to resist. But Anya came aboard to work, face her demons, and then get the hell back to dry land.

Until Tanner convinces her to take the plunge.

She quickly dives into a fun, carefree arrangement with him and embraces her goal to be brave, no matter how loudly her shaky knees tell her to abandon ship. For twelve days, Tanner’s all hers. For twelve days, she’s his goddess. Once the cruise is over and the ship docks, she won’t be the same. But being brave always costs something, and this time, it might cost her heart.

EXCERPT:

My hair blows wildly as Tanner flies down the road, The Neighbourhood’s “Sweater Weather” blaring loudly through the speakers. The road curves and we wind around, little glimpses of the water flashing in between the thickets of palm trees that line the shoulders. We cruise farther and farther from any signs of tourist activity, leaving the cabanas and guest beach in the dust. A few minutes pass and we speed around another corner, peeling onto a long, dirt driveway that leads deep into the tropical brush.
A small turquoise house comes into view, its shutters weathered, the paint peeled along the slats.
“What are we doing here?” I finally ask as Tanner brings the car to a stop.
He reaches over and turns the radio off, then flicks the ignition. The windows are still open, and the purr of the smooth machine we’re sitting in dies. “You’re here to learn some more Tanner Christensen 101,” he says matter-of-factly, yanking me over the console and onto his lap. A surprised yelp sends the wind rushing from my lungs. When I collide with him, he finally tears his shades away and tosses them on the passenger seat.
I grip his shoulders, my eyes wide.
“Let me clarify something for you, Miss Banks,” he demands, gathering my disheveled, windswept hair in his hands and holding it at the nape of my neck. “I was under the assumption that when we made our agreement, the exclusivity we discussed went both ways.”
I blink. “Well, you assumed right. I wasn’t doing anything with—”
“I don’t want to hear his name,” he snaps, clutching the back of my head, “I don’t want to know anything about him. I already got an eyeful of his hands on you, and it told me everything I need to know. He’s a boy, not a man, and he won’t be able to take care of you.” His mouth hits my throat, hot and wet. He murmurs against my skin, voice raw and rough, an unhinged edge to his tone. “Right now, you’re going to ride me hard. One, because it’s been a hell of a morning and I need it, and two because you need it and you don’t know it yet.” His fingers make quick work of my bikini top, ripping at the flimsy strings. He flings it aside and then tears my bottoms off, swinging my legs around like a pro. He kisses me, his mouth harsh, tongue demanding. I taste the sea salt from my skin on his lips.
His hands are firm and controlled, roaming everywhere. Sand grinds at my skin with each touch. He’s sucking the breath from me and I’m so shocked, I can’t even process the deprivation. I can only sink into him, quench his thirst and satisfy his hunger. I push at his suit jacket, frantically peeling it down his shoulders. He groans in approval and cups my breasts, squeezing and trailing his thumbs along the undersides.
“Tanner,” I whimper, “I love the way you touch me.”
“Bite,” he demands huskily, placing the pad of his thumb on my bottom lip. I obey and press my teeth down, moaning as he pushes his hips up to deliver the most delicious pressure. His thumb leaves my mouth and trails across my jaw bone, landing just below my ear. He rubs gently, the moist pad working delicate strokes into the skin. “You like this spot, baby?”
I lean into his touch, and my eyes drift shut in pure pleasure. “Yes.”
He keeps rubbing the space just below my ear while he leans up to nip my lips, working me into a blissful haze. The last few minutes are a blur. In a matter of seconds of being on this man’s lap, I’ve almost forgotten my morning with Lana and Brie, and my walk on the beach with Jonah. All my body registers is Tanner’s raging need and my desire to give him what he’s desperate for.
